Emerton Wins 4th Slate; Promises More

In going with the underdog Seahawks, Eric Emerton left his wife Diane the 

full field of Pittsburgh picks for her SuperPick -- but Diane went with 

Seattle also, and as it turns out, had very little chance regardless.  

Pittsburgh won by an relatively unlikely 11 points, and Eric subsequently 

won an unprecedented 4th Slate, staking an indubiable claim on being the 

best FMNFLP poolster of all time.

     After a season bemoaned for anticlimax, Diane's SuperPick attempt of 

"Seattle 4" appropiately looked nearly impossible after the first Seattle 

field goal of the game, and Eric thus won the pool by a completely 

uncompetitive 57 points, an all-time record.  The most exciting thing about 

FunkWeekend XIII was the announcement of a little Emerton on the way, and 

the guarantee that Emerton Jr. will win the Slate in 2024.

    Normally, such a boast would seem silly and far-fetched, but nobody is 

doubting Emerton's prediction skills these days -- his record 57-point Slate 

Victory clearly separates him from the rest of the pool.  Not only does he 

have 4 Slates now (nobody else has 3), but he has finished in the Top 4 in 

seven of the eleven seasons he's competed.  7 of 11.  (5 of the people in 

this pool have never finished in the Top 4.)  E is now in his own world: 

Only Money and Sabbe have 2 Slates, and neither of them have won any 

hardware since 1999 -- and neither of them have as many weekly wins.

    The chances are now extremely good that E will be winning the "actual" 

Slate -- whoever has their name on the Slate the most times when all 16 

spots are filled up gets to keep it forever.  Now that he has his name in 

25% of the slots, there are only 6 more seasons before Eric gets a chance to 

hang that Slate above the fireplace forever -- for his young child to gaze 

upon every day of his life.

    Diane finishes in 2nd place, and after three straight seasons in the Top 

7, now has to be considered a major player in the FMNFLP.  Only 4 other 

poolsters have rung up 3 straight Top-7 performances in the modern era.

    On a trivial sidenote, KenDoggie won the "2nd chance pool" by an 

overwhelming 50-something points, while Godsey got his money back.



It was fortunate that Godsey didn't try to drive to Half Moon Bay for 

FunkyBowl XIII -- he would have died.  He barely made the drive to Morro Bay 

after working until 4am.  As it was, he watched the game with the adorable 

Ellen, who, after looking at all the FunkyBowl photos online, only had one 

thing to say: "I think I would really like that girl (Kathy)."  We have no 

other news from Half Moon Bay -- we'll leave those updates up to them.
