SCOTT WYATT SOUNDS HIS BARBARIC YAWP
Emerton Clan still in charge despite Wyatts' rebel yells
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
With his two feet back on American soil, yelling such things as "I'M BACK!"
and "GO G-MEN!", Scott Wyatt is proving to be large, containing multitudes,
and willing to step up to the Emerton stronghold. Both Wyatts have been
noisy in the "Trash Talk" room, and both of them are backing it up: Scott is
the first non-Emerton to win a week this season, and Wyatt has now climbed
from 18th to 13th. Both Wyatts crossed the playoff line this week, trading
spots with Adam Jennings and DOliver.
While the Emerton family finally ceded a weekly win, they are still
very much in charge of the overall standings, even more than the previous
week. Mike Godsey fell rather ungracefully from 3rd place, and so all three
Emertons have all three top spots. On the other hand, due to the
conservative nature of the pool thus far, there's quite a mob right behind
them. In Week 4, almost all (19 of the 24) of the poolsters were within 14
points of Scott Wyatt; and overall, it's still anybody's Slate (though
Schussel, Farnsworth, Wego, and Sabbe seem content playing with each other
in the basement). With the exception of those four, everyone is within 50
points of the Emerton Triumvirate.
It was the first time Scott Wyatt has finished in the money since Week
5 of last year, when he also won the week. Eric Franzen won money for the
first time in over a year, while the once-verbose "Wego" Wengronowitz has
now gone 21 weeks straight underneath the money line, and has completely
lost his swagger. And Eric Emerton, with 3 Slates, in second place overall
this year, has now gone 86 weeks without winning the top spot.
Other random stats:
----------------------------
- Ken, Robert, and Franzen, in their careers, have combined for 27 money
finishes. This would place them (*combined*) alongside Scott Farnsworth for
15th all-time. In terms of "money finishes per season," these three guys
fill up three of the bottom four spots. All three of them finished in the
money this week.
- Mike Schussel's last-place finish gives him 8 for his career. Money
Retsek has none. SchussDaddy now has the exact same number of last-place
and first-place finishes as Diane Emerton.
- In his first 9 years in the pool, Sabbe finished in the Top Ten in 8 of
them. Since then, he has finished 17th, 20th, and he's now in 22nd.
- Like the even years much? Over the past 4 years, SchussDaddy has finished
20th, then 7th, then 26th, then 5th, and now he's back in 24th.
- The Brothers Godsey have combined to go 0-8 in games involving the Saints.
- If the game has involved the Cowboys, Falcons, Chiefs, Broncos, or
Seahawks, Wego picked the game wrong.
- Only one of us has been in this pool every year and has yet to get voted
for Clown Pick of the Week. That streak is over. (see below.)
You would have won if...
------------------------------------
KenDoggie: The Bills had won.
Kathy: If the Seahawks could make a field goal
Robert: If the Chiefs could hold onto an 18-point lead at home.
Franzen: Jets
JLee: Cowboys (damn the Raiders!)
Sully: Oilers
Picks of the Week
--------------------------
Real nice voter turnout this week with 10 pow-voters and 11 haters, and each
category was won by a 2-vote margin. Franzen's dozen on Washington was
given a couple shout-outs, but the clear winner was Patrick's 10 on the
RoadChargers over the defending champions. It's Patrick's 8th career Pick
of the Week.
Meanwhile, nine different picks were nominated as cow-worthy, but only
DOliver's full boat on the Chiefs received multiple lashings. In 12 years,
this is the first time DOliver's pick has been voted Clown Pick of the Week.
Can We Just Say?
-------------------------
Boring-ass veggies that aren't fresh. Dry bread. Swiss that, if any
thinner, would be a considered gaseous. A six-inch *veggie* sandwich now
costs as much as a foot-long full boat used to cost, and when the only
girl-customer in the shop is clearly hotter than the sorry excuse for a
Kona's-hottie, then Kona's has officially jumped the shark. Let's just say
that if you made a habit of putting points on Kona's each week, you'd be
down in the Schussel-realm of your sandwich pool. Just saying.
Call-outs
------------
Just when it seemed that the call-outs were dead, Sabbe of all people, with
a 2-year-old sitting on his lap (without earmuffs!), stated flatly:
"The Bucs suck my ass."
Well Sabbe, now they're hitting the road without their Cadillac, and Mike
Godsey is still putting full points on the Bengals and Bucs. Obviously,
nobody puts a full boat against the eventual Super Bowl champions, but if
you wanted to put a little 1 against them, that might be interesting.
Especially since you're already in "nothing to lose" land anyhow....
Call-ins
---------
And also, another classic rivalry is taking place as Diane's Bills take on
Wyatt's Dolphins. It might be interesting to see who puts more points on
the other team.
Next week:
-----------------
Chicago at Cleveland (Money vs. Jennings?)
Miami at Buffalo (Diane vs. Wyatt?)
and a *fifth* chance to beat the Bucs and Bengals, clearly the two best
teams in football.
Till then....
