As Wego bails out, FunkyPool suffers Money's Bear Market
--------------
After Wego's bolt to the top of the Week 3, his charge continued in
Week 4 as the Chargers came back against the Raiders and he looked
ready to pose for his second straight photo. However, a foolish
investment in the RoadEagles came back to haunt him on Sunday night,
after he also over-speculated on the Cowboys late in the afternoon.
Cowboy-hating Dylan "Money" Retsek, on the other hand, bought low on
Washington, and then proudly predicted a Bear market (a 9 on his team
when only three other poolsters picked them at all) and won the week
for the 15th time in his career -- all while throwing down a timely
Swingers quote on the smack page.
Money's 15th win ties him with Eric Emerton and Chris Sabbe for 2nd
on the all-time list, and pulls him back to within striking distance
of the playoff line. Wego and Mike Godsey (with a vengeant solo shot
against the Broncos), looked to finish 1st and 3rd late Sunday
evening, but didn't receive the necessary assistance from the National
Football League in the 11th hour, and finished a nominal 2nd and 6th
instead. Nevertheless, the duo from Charger Nation took over 2nd and
3rd in the overall pool, with Mr. Emerton (3rd place for the week)
barely behind them in 4th. Eric Emerton, the vocal proponent of the
"middle road," remained in the league lead with the lowest (most
conservative) dot total (582) in two years (Eric himself logged a 518
in Week 6 of 2006).
- It's the 12th time in this pool's history that two players (this
time, Money and The Man) have flown solo in the same week.
Incidentally, only two players have ever soloed twice by themselves
-- Eric (twice) and Diane Emerton -- ever since Ely Kumli (he's a real
person) double soloed in the first and second week of this pool's
existence. Godsey's 13 shots puts him 2nd place on the all-time list,
behind Kevin Sabbe's 16.
- It's been 38 weeks since Money last won, and 34 weeks since "Cowboy"
Hassanali has finished in last place.
If only...
- Wego had been right about the Bears sucking, he would've won the
week. He also would've won with a Dallas win.
- If the Raiders had won, Franzen still would've only finished in 5th
place.
Pick of the Week
-----------
We're publishing this rag early this week (on time), and so the voting
booth hasn't closed yet. Nevertheless, we can offer some candidates:
While Adam Jennings doesn't "immaturely whip out [his] full boat to
wag at everyone in the pool in a misguided attempt to prove [his]
machismo and fanaticism," he does wisely pick his Browns for a dozen
(349 dots); Mike Godsey, who admits that he "wags his thirteen" at
anybody who wants physical evidence of machismo, pegged a solo shot
with the Chiefs (340 dots); Dylan Retsek's week-winning 9 on his Bears
(336 dots) was awfully nice; and Money's solo shot on the Redskins
(301 dots) was even cooler (though some people hold the anti-Dallas
habit against him in terms of originality). Meanwhile....
Clown of the Week
-----------
Tully and Kathy Wyatt lost the most dots on a non-Raider game, missing
two birds with one stone (the Cardinals and Falcons; 350 and 340 dots
respectively), and Robert Hassanali suffered a Solo Whiff with the
Rams (324 dots). Meanwhile, the people usually like to vote for
Raider fans who deny their team (a little more love might have helped
a team over the top against a 1-2 road team), or for Raider fans who
support their team (Eric Franzen's 465 dots). We're not sure if
Franzen's 23 first-half text messages justify how awesome that pick
was, or highlight how ridiculous Raider fans are, but we'll let the
people decide. Hit the booths!
