RS stands for “Racing Speedily”
----------------------
One of the frequently asked questions here at Weekly Update is: Who is
Ron Salvatori? Not only do we field the question through electronic
mail, but we oftentimes ask it ourselves, to ourselves, while gazing
out the window with a glass of scotch. The scotch was left here, of
course, by Zack Schwartz, who doesn’t know who RS is, either. So we
did a little research. In just over one year of work, he’s earned two
POWs and a COW, he’s discovered the weekly basement, and he’s not
afraid to pick his own Niners. Even though he looks like he’s about 7
years old, he’s a semi-pro triathlete, and he already has one kid of
his own -- 7 years old, coincidently. So he’s fertile. That’s a good
thing in most cases.
More importantly, the man (whose slogan is “Things are gonna change.
I can feel it. I’m a driver. I’m a winner”) just won the 5th race of
the season, the first of his entire life. Not only that, but Speed
Racer is going the distance, he’s going for speed. Racer Salvotori
(or is it Ron Speed? Nothing feels right yet.) just stepped on the
gas and blew the doors off of Sabbe, WegoFallingDownTheStandings,
KenDoggie, The Godfather, and Diane. He’s now in the third position,
and if Emerton and Godsey don’t see him in their rear-view mirror,
it’s because they’re not looking. Or it’s because they have faith in
a diabolical plan to thwart Speed Racer during a scary Week 6.
In Week 5, however, Salvatori coasted to victory thanks to his league-
leading 7 on the Redskins, his league-leading 11 on the Titans, and
his solo shot (a 4) on the Dolphins. Here at the Weekly Update, we
were a little surprised to see so much confidence in the 2-2 Chargers--
it seems the pool should focus less on how ridiculous Charger fans
are, and concentrate more on how ridiculous the Chargers are. In any
case, Mr. Speed was the only one to duck the hype, and his solo shot
takes the week.
Trailing behind him, Kevin Sabbe and Scott Farnsworth cashed nicely,
while Adam Jennings and Eric Franzen placed in the money for the first
time in 10 weeks. Diane Emerton won money for the second straight
week. Overall, Godsey is just a point behind Eric Emerton, and Speed
Racer and Diane are within single digits. The playoff line is still a
very friendly 35 points back, and almost everybody is within 20 points
of that. Keith Wengronowitz, just 6 points back of Emerton at the
start of the week, is now sitting in 7th place, 24 points back.
Stats and Observations:
--------------
Not only is it Ron’s first-ever weekly win, it’s the first time in 138
weeks that Wego has finished in last place. The last time it happened
was the second week of 2000. Bush was running for president, for the
first time. This might be close to a record, but we remember that one
of the Dylans lasted a very long time.
Bill Ellis hasn’t finished in last place in 94 weeks, the longest
current streak.
- Ron now has more solo shots (1) than Jen Retsek, Wego, Scott
Farnsworth, Mr. Emerton, Kurt Schwartz, and Robert Hassanali, and
KenDoggie have combined (with 63 collective years in the pool).
- It has been 79 weeks since Eric Franzen has won the week.
- Sabbe is 0-5 with Denver games. Shanahan is in his head.
- Money is 0-5 with Packer games (and just put a 12 on them)
- DOliver is 0-4 with his 14-pick.
- “Cowboy” Hassanali is 1-9 with his 1- and 2-picks.
- The pool is hitting just 55% with their 15-pick.
If Only...
----
If the Chargers had won, Franzen would’ve won the week. Guess that’s
what happens when you text badly of them, 24 times. He also would’ve
won if Baltimore had hung on.
If Philly had won at home, Adam Jennings would’ve won at home.
Pick of the Week:
------------
Ew. We were excited to announce that Ron Racer has earned another POW
for his solo shot, but then we noticed he voted for himself. We
warned y’all something like this would happen when you allow newbies
to collect too many POWs too early. Now he has more POWs (3) than Jen
Retsek (14 years in the pool), Chris Sabbe (15 years in the pool), or
JLee himself. Nice 4, Ron. But I guess we don’t have to tell you that.
Clown of the Week:
----------
We can’t announce a loser yet, because the voting is too weak (4
votes), scattered (all different), and lame (we can’t even break the
tie, because we can’t support any of them). Get to it, people.
Next Week:
-------------
Kurt Schwartz’s Dolphins are at Hassanali and SchussDaddy’s Texans.
Wyatt’s Cardinals and Money’s hatred try to hold of the Cowboys.
Mr. Emerton and Scott Wyatt’s Giants are at Jennings’ Browns.
See ya then....
